THE INVASIVE SPECIES CRISIS

Globally, thousands of invasive species introduced to local ecosystems are posing major threats to biodiversity.

In Canada specifically, there are about 486 invasive species , and BC remains one of the biggest homes to invasive species in Canada. Invasive species are non-native organisms that, when introduced to new environments,  pose a grave threat to ecosystems, wreaking havoc through competition, predation, and disease transmission. They outcompete and sometimes eliminate native species, disrupt ecological relationships, and alter the very structure and function of ecosystems. These "invaders", often unchecked by natural predators and competitors, erode biodiversity and causes lasting harm to both native species and the services ecosystems provide to humans, such as clean water and air and food.

"Biodiversity loss is one of the most critical imperatives of modern society. There is no second chance from extinction."
